Known for its constant collaborations with popular culture icons and shows, Fortnite makes little to no mistakes when it comes to pleasing its growing community. However, in a recent update, the popular Battle Royale has put itself in a difficult situation. This update, described as “ISLAND AGE CATEGORIES” of Fortnite, makes certain islands (game modes) and skins limited to a certain audience.
In an official X post, Fortnite confirmed that approximately 7% of skins are affected by the age restriction. They can only be equipped on islands rated Teen. While Fortnite claims that these cosmetics are limited to certain maps and game modes for now, it wants to make changes to them so that in the future the skins will automatically change in appearance based on the island. This may result in the cosmetics being changed depending on the age of the player.
Fortnite age restrictions explained
In this update, Fortnite has a ESRB rating tag to every island. This limits the criteria for players to opt out of certain games. This is also reflected in the skins, as the skins also show an error message stating that they are not available on certain islands because there will be a younger audience. If you qualify, you can click the play button immediately.

However, if you are younger than the age criteria, you will have to wait until you are old enough to enter that island. Another noticeable change is that parents can unlock the restricted islands for their children if they wish via parental settings.
