Asus presented a variety of new laptops at CES 2022, from high-end gaming models to ultraportables to a futuristic premium design with a foldable screen. The company is getting OLED displays in many of its new models, and the ZenBook 14X series offers both portability and up-to-date specifications. While we won’t be able to travel to CES to see these products in person, we will have one of the company’s brand new models, the ZenBook 14X OLED Space Edition, with us. Here’s a quick first look.

As the name suggests, the Space Edition is a special edition of the ZenBook 14X. It will be every 25. in memorye Anniversary of an Asus laptop that was sent into space in 1997 to serve 600 days on board the Mir space station. It comes in a specially designed package with a picture of Me and space-inspired images. The laptop itself and the USB Type-C charger are included in the main shipment in separate boxes – the charging box can be opened into a stand with which the device can be placed on a table.

Aside from the packaging, there are some space tokens and stickers in the box. The main feature of this laptop can be recognized by a cutout in the inner box – the 3.5-inch monochrome OLED display on the outside of the lid. The design of the “space capsule” contains a message in Morse code: Ad astra per aspera, which means something like “through distress to the stars”.

When you turn on the ZenBook 14X OLED Space Edition for the first time, you’ll see a predictable space-themed animation on the external screen. You can customize this via the Asus software that comes pre-installed – there are a few additional animation options and you can choose your own custom text too.

This may seem new, but hopefully it will come in handy for things like notifications and status updates so you don’t have to open the lid of your laptop to see what’s going on. At the moment it looks like an extension of the anime matrix screen on the Asus Zephyrus G series laptops, which is mostly for novelty value. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen an Asus external display – the company waged a short-lived attack with its W5Fe laptop 2007 to use the Windows Vista SideShow feature.

The external screen measures 3.5 inches diagonally and has a resolution of 256 × 64 and a maximum brightness of 150nit

The space theme continues inside, with orange accents on the keyboard and more “space capsule” design in the palm rest area. The 14-inch 4K 16:10 90 Hz HDR OLED touchscreen is a real eye-catcher and looks extremely bright and lively. Asus has certainly ticked a lot of boxes and also lists 100 percent DCI-P3 color space coverage and Pantone certification.

Inside, you get one of Intel’s new 12e Mobile CPUs of the ‘Alder Lake’ generation with options for Core i9, Core i7 and Core i5. There are up to 32 GB non-upgradeable LPDDR5 and up to 1 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. Other specifications are Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. The battery capacity is 63Wh.

There are some connections on the sides. On the left you will see an HDMI 2.0 output and two Thunderbolt 4 Type-C ports. On the right side there is a USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A port, a 3.5 mm audio jack and a microSD slot. Unfortunately, this lock aligns exactly with the ventilation slots on the laptop and can be mixed up. As expected, this laptop runs Windows 11 from the factory.

Weighing in at 1.3 kg and 15.9 mm thick, the ZenBook 14X OLED Space Edition is exactly the same as today’s mainstream laptops. It may sit at an angle on the unfolded adapter box, but this isn’t the most reassuring mount. When you’re lying flat on a table, the Asus ErgoLift hinge design lifts the back slightly so that the base is angled for more comfortable typing and better airflow.

The ZenBook 14X OLED Space Edition will undoubtedly sell for a premium. Asus says it will be launched and generally available in India later in 2022. If you’re looking for a laptop that will get noticed everywhere, this is sure to be the one for you, but we’ll wait until we have more information before deciding whether the extra screen and design flair is worth versus this model to choose its more conventional siblings. Sisters.
