How to Get the Trial Key in Minecraft 1.21

Just like every Minecraft update, the upcoming update 1.21 will not only introduce new mobs and blocks, but also items. Some can be used in recipe creation, while others have their own unique purposes. One of those special items is the Trial Key, which you can only get in the Trial Rooms. We dedicate this entire guide to this little item and share everything you need to know about it. So, without further ado, let’s see how to get the trial key in Minecraft 1.21.

What is the trial key in Minecraft 1.21

The trial key is an item added in the Minecraft 1.21 update. It looks like a brass key with a dark blue creepy skull as a handle. Because update 1.21 is in beta testing, the usage of this item is currently unknown.

It may have something to do with the copper doors, which currently behave the same as other non-iron doors. Although it may only have a purpose within the Process room, since that’s the only place you can get it (more on that below). We ensure that this manual is kept up to date, so that you are immediately informed as soon as new information becomes available.

Where to find the trial key in Minecraft?

You can obtain the Trial Key in the Trial Chambers and only within this structure, which is generated near the deep shale layer. If you want to know how to find Trial Chambers, we already have a guide that can help you find them.

Trial key is one relatively rare decline you can get into this underground structure from multiple sources. Speaking of the resources, you can get the trial key from a coffin at the entrance (6.8% chance), decorated pots in the hallway (3.6% chance), and as a reward for completing the trial spawner challenge (50% chance). Since there’s a good chance you’ll get this item from a trial spawner, let’s go through it right now.

What is the trial spawner?

Trial spawner is a special spawner type that summons a limited number of mobs proportional to the number of players joining the battle. If you are playing in a single player world, each trial spawner will spawn 6 mobs at a time. First two mobs will appear and as soon as you kill one a new mob will appear. If you manage to kill two mobs at once, the spawner will spawn two more.

So essentially you’re fighting two mobs from a trial spawner, except when you’ve killed five and the remaining mob is the sixth and final mob. After defeating all spawned mobs, the trial spawner will enter a cooldown state that lasts 30 minutes. No mob will appear during the cooldown, but afterwards it will be ready to offer you a new challenge. Moreover, it also gives you rewards such as valuable items. One of these items could also be the trial key you are looking for.

The game chooses mobs from which to summon this spawner four categories. Each Trial Chamber has mobs from the melee, small melee, and ranged categories, as well as some Breeze gang trial spawners. Which mob the spawner will spawn is indicated by the blocks surrounding it. So the trial spawner of the mobs can spawn and the corresponding blocks are the following:

  • Melee
    • Zombie (mossy cobblestones)
    • Peel (chiseled sandstone)
    • Slime (moss block)
  • Small melee
    • Silverfish (stone pebbles)
    • Baby Zombie (cobblestone and mossy cobblestones)
    • Spider (stone and spider web on top)
    • Cave spider (stone and spider web on top and podzol with a red mushroom)
  • Reaches
    • Lost (packed ice cream)
    • Skeleton (bone block)
    • Skeleton with arrow with poison tip (bone block and podzol with a red mushroom)
  • Wind (chiseled tuff)

Additionally, each Trial Chamber contains trial spawners for only one mob per category. So if you’ve found this structure and the first trial spawner you see spawns skeletons, that means the entire structure’s ranged mobs are skeletons. Therefore, you won’t encounter any other ranged mobs at all.

In short, one experimental chamber can produce skeletons, zombies and silverfish, while another can produce strays, husks and spiders. The rule does not apply to the Breeze spawners, as each Trial Room has 100% of these spawners distributed.

As we already mentioned, the applications of the trial key are not certain so far. But it does seem like a very valuable and special item that you will most likely want to own. Although that’s all we know about it for now. What do you think of the trial key? Let us know in the comments below!
