Microsoft just announced that it has adopted Sam Altmanthe former CEO of OpenAI and creator behind it ChatGPT. To summarize the events that led to this decision: Altman was recently kicked out of OpenAIand a new CEO was appointed. A new one today A second interim CEO was appointed at OpenAI, and it was confirmed that Sam Altman will do so not returning to the company.
Now it seems Microsoft will be the big winner amid the shaky leadership changes at OpenAI. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced on X (formerly Twitter) that “Sam Altman and Greg Brockman will join colleagues at Microsoft to lead a new cutting-edge AI research team.“
Microsoft will do that continues its collaboration with OpenAI (and working things out with the new leadership). Altman, however, along with a few brilliant, influential AI researchers who previously worked at OpenAI will join Microsoft and essentially become a driving force in Microsoft’s artificial intelligence efforts! So yes, Microsoft is bringing the main man and brains behind ChatGPT to their company without buying OpenAI.
Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI. Currently it uses GPT to implement Copilot, available on Windows 11 and also coming to Windows 10 soon. Moreover, there are plans to integrate it into Microsoft 365 and Office products as well. Sam Altman could soon contribute to the development of Maia chips for AI.
According to a NYT reportSam’s plans regarding a new company include pitching AI processing chips to various investors. It attracted a lot of interest, including from Microsoft. When Sam Altman was at OpenAI, he was already working with Microsoft to refine these chips.
That’s just a glimpse of what could happen in the present. In the future it will be very exciting to see all of Microsoft’s big plans new AI research team. They have the right members, especially Sam Altman, perhaps the most renowned person in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Hopefully Sam Altman’s goal of creating AI that enriches human lives remains true!
