Microsoft ‘Hudson Valley’ Windows to Be AI-Focused with 2024 Release

Windows 11 has evolved tremendously over the years! We recently received the Copilot AI update, along with other features like Background Removal in Paint. All the recent updates in Windows 11 that MS has released fall into the realm of AI-powered improvements to the operating system.

Microsoft is reportedly switching to one new road map for Windows update cycles soon. Additionally, the ‘Hudson Valley’ update is coming, which will introduce an assortment of AI-focused features to Windows 2024. This information comes through Windows Centralthat claims to have exclusive sources that provide the roadmap and the upcoming ‘Hudson Valley‘update for Windows.

We could already see Hudson Valley appearing June 2024. This is based on information from the report, which claims that OEMs could prepare ARM-compatible PCs with Snapdragon X Elite to start shipping around that date. However, keep in mind that none of this has been fully confirmed.

Hudson Valley is all about artificial intelligence

The main focus of the coming Hudson Valley update would bring “Next-generation AI experiences” to the next major release of Microsoft’s Windows operating system. These features are expected to be closely intertwined with the Windows operating system, allowing for great versatility. A great feature of Hudson Valley would be: “advanced copilot.” Many impressive possibilities were described:

  • Runs in the background to continuously understand context
  • Improved search, with the ability to accept natural language input
  • New ‘history/timeline’ feature in the works

According to Windows Central’s sources, these new AI features will ‘groundbreaking.’ Other new AI features were also mentioned in the report. Reportedly new ‘AI-powered wallpapers‘ are also coming to Windows via the Hudson Valley update. It is described as having the ability to understand the layers of the image.

Moreover, the AI wallpaper will dynamically produce a parallax effect that gives an immersive effect to the wallpaper. It can even communicate with your mouse cursor and the PC’s built-in gyroscope. This feature has also been brought to Windows by Razer through their Axon appbut Razer’s solution is one paid.

A new ‘Super resolution‘ feature is expected to be present. This is said to dynamically improve image quality in photos, videos and even games! The energy saving Windows mode is also expected to improve. Finally, a new desktop interface could happen with the Hudson Valley update. This new UI could put the system tray at the top instead.

New roadmap for Windows planned

WindowsReport also talks about a new roadmap for Windows updates. After Hudson Valley goes away for everyone, Microsoft is expected to switch to one annual cycle for important Windows updates. Over the past few years, MS has essentially released groups of new features in the form of Windows feature updates.

These types of updates have been released several times within a year. According to the new planned roadmap, on which Member States will mainly focus one major update per year instead of several smaller ones. This also means that the company has left the previous three-year cycle.

The bigger speculation right now, though, is whether the Hudson Valley update will actually mean that Windows 12 is coming. According to WindowsReport’s sources: “Microsoft has grown tired of further fragmenting the Windows user base with a new product release.”

Ultimately, it will come down to Microsoft’s intentions: how big this update is and how it wants to be marketed. As we mentioned, Hudson Valley is a planned update for Windows that is expected to arrive 2024.

Upcoming Windows AI Features: Are They Exclusive to New PCs or Not?

The report also states NPU hardware control certain functions. However, it could be just be that Intel processors with an NPU chip (like coming Intel 14th Gen Core Ultra processors) will run faster than PCs that don’t have them.

After the Hudson Valley update is released, we can expect many AI features to work offline as well (thanks to NPU). But what about PCs without the chip? It’s unclear for now which upcoming Windows AI features will be exclusive to modern PCs and whether or not they will work for older PCs.

If I were to speculate, I think PCs without NPU will essentially have a greater reliance on the cloud. As a result, standard PCs would have slower speeds during AI processing compared to PCs with NPU chips. Intel’s 14th generation Meteor Lake is the first processor with built-in NPU chips. AMD will also release its Ryzen 8000 processors in 2024, with an NPU chip and XDNA 2. However, older PCs will not be complete left in the dust and should also get several AI features via the next major Windows update.
