Sam Altman may not be coming back to OpenAI after all. Attempts by company leaders and partners to bring back the former CEO have failed. This is what Ilya Sutskever, board member and chief scientist at OpenAI, says. For those who didn’t know, Altman was expelled by the OpenAI board for “a consistent lack of candor in his communications with the board.”
And now Emmett Shear is the new interim CEO of OpenAI, as confirmed in the final report of The Information. He is the former CEO of Twitch, the hugely popular streaming platform. He replaces Mira Murati as interim CEO of the AI company behind ChatGPT. Furthermore, according to a memo reviewed Shear was appointed to the position ahead of him by the NYT “unique blend of skills, expertise and relationships that will drive OpenAI forward.”
Several reports on the recent discussions stated that Sam wanted the current OpenAI board to do so step down if he were to return as CEO of the company. TheInformation’s original report claims that Sutskever told staff that “Altman will not return to the startup he co-founded in 2015.” The board firmly supports the decision taken by investors and partners earlier last week.

In recent days, heated discussions took place at OpenAI headquarters about Altman’s dismissal. According to The edgewhat the board was aiming for Bring back Sam Altman. This was because employees threatened to walk away (with additional pressure from investors). Many scientists at OpenAI apparently prefer Sam Altman’s leadership.

Naturally, Sam alluded to the upcoming decision on whether or not he will return as CEO. Now that a second new interim CEO (and a total of three CEOs in the last few days alone) has been appointed, it is a rocky time and OpenAI. It will be interesting to see what happens next at the AI company and what direction they take in the future.
