What Is Baroque Works in One Piece (Explained)

One of the most devious and criminally minded organizations we’ve ever seen in the One Piece universe is Baroque Works. Krokodil, a former warlord, founded this criminal organization. As we saw in the Arabasta Saga, the main purpose of the founding was to defeat and subdue the Arabasta Kingdom. Even Netflix’s live-action series One Piece has hinted at this organization for its impending arrival second season. So it’s likely that many of you would like to know more about the ins and outs of the Baroque Works organization. What is the Baroque Works Organization?

Baroque Works is a brutal crime syndicate founded and led by Sir Crocodile. It is an organization made up of delinquents, mercenaries, bounty hunters and others. Over the years, they engaged in infiltration, assassination operations, and kidnappings under the pretext of creating an all-powerful new country in the One Piece universe.

The main operation of the Baroque Works was known as ‘Operation Utopia’. Crocodile snuck in while the hero of the Arabasta who saved their country from pirates. But in reality, he used this undercover organization to foment a civil war in Arabasta by blaming the Nefertari family for the chaos they caused.

Operation Utopia was intended to overthrow the current ruler of the Arabasta Kingdom (the Nefertari family) and elect Crocodile as the new ruler. Krokodil wanted to get his hands on it too ancient weapon, Plutonthus becoming a superpower that can challenge even the World Government.

Even though they are not a pirate crew, this organization has its own Jolly Roger. It follows the usual Jolly Rogers style, with a skull surrounded by crossed rapiers and a purple wing on his back.

This Jolly Roger was also teased in the first season of the One Piece live-action series (read the Live-action review of One Piece). Additionally, this Jolly Roger is reportedly featured in the members’ flags, sails, shirts, and tattoos.

There are certain rules and orders that this underworld crime syndicate follows. They are as follows:

  • All members of the organization are given a code name for secrecy and to make running business easier.
  • The male members were assigned numbered code names, such as Mr. 1, Mr. 2, etc.
  • Meanwhile, female members were assigned codenames based on weekdays and holidays. For example – Miss Wednesday, Miss Goldenweek, etc.
  • Each male member was paired with a female member and they worked together as a team to complete the missions. This excludes Mr.2, as he is an Okama.
  • Members of the Baroque Works were not allowed to meet their senior officers, as everyone’s identity was kept secret.
  • They were instructed solely to follow and carry out the orders of their superior officers.
  • All agents can expect promotions if they perform brilliantly in their role, just like in the real world.

Ranking system of the Baroque works

There were a total of approximately 2,000 members in the Baroque Works organization. That is why Barok Works, like all other One Piece organizations, had its own classification system. It was nicely explained by Vivi in ​​manga chapter 155, as you can see above. I will list them below in order (from highest to lowest):

  • President and Vice President: Crocodile (Mr. 0) served as the founder and chairman of the Baroque Works organization. He was at the top of the control line. The new Straw Hats Pirates member Nico Robin (Miss All Sunday) worked as vice president of Mr. 0, which gave both the greatest control in this organization.
  • Officer Agents: The following officers were known as the officers’ officers. This level of agents consists of Mr. 1’s team to Mr. 5’s team. They were the strongest and most important agents with great devil fruit powers.
  • Border agents: Next we have the Frontier Agents, consisting of Mr. 6’s team to Mr. 12’s team. These are agents who are slightly less important than officer agents. They perform duties such as leading the subordinates, collecting funds, etc. at the entrance to the main line.
  • Punishments (accidents): Mr. 13’s team is called the Punishers and is responsible for communications and handling executions/punishments.
  • Billions: These are the 200 subordinates who work directly under the Officer Agents and perform the tasks.

Current status of Baroque works

After the combined efforts of the Straw Hat Pirates and Princess Vivi, the civil war ended and Operation Utopia failed. For example, the Baroque Works organization was shown to the public together with its founder, Crocodile.

Consequently, the organization was disbanded after an attack on the Straw Hats. In addition, many of its members were later arrested by the Marines. Some were also able to escape and continue their journey in the main story.
