Meta says that “this new feature provides an extra layer of privacy and security, especially aimed at our most privacy-conscious users.

Conversations on WhatsApp are also encrypted end-to-end, so even WhatsApp cannot listen to the conversations you have with others. The feature is similar to the way iOS can hide your IP address, introduced in iOS 15. This can be enabled through the Safari settings. You will be given the option to hide your IP address by going to the Privacy settings in the app and selecting the Advanced option. You can choose to use the “Keep the IP address on calls” option. One thing to note is that enabling this setting has a downside and the the call quality will decrease.

This is in addition to the ‘Silence unknown callers‘ function, which was recently introduced. WhatsApp uses a “specialized protocol for delivering stripped-down, muted call notifications‘ to the receiver. Once enabled, you will not receive notifications of calls from unknown people and possibly spam. They still appear in the call logs so you are aware of the callers.
