Download WhatsApp status: what it is and how to use it for free
Social media has created an obsession with everyone’s “status” – what are you doing now? With WhatsApp owned by Facebook, it is obvious that it won’t be long before the status feature finally gets to WhatsApp. So what does the WhatsApp status function look like and how do you get your breakfast on it?
But first we have to explain what a status is. WhatsApp can be a photo or video of what you’re doing, thinking, or seeing something. It differs slightly from Facebook Stories and Instagram Stories in that the latter two have more features, including the ability to “like” the status / story and leave comments.

To view and view someone’s WhatsApp status, go to the WhatsApp mobile app and tap status At the bottom. If any of your contacts recently received a status update, it’ll be listed here. Just tap on it to view it. On the desktop and web browser versions of WhatsApp, click the broken circle logo next to your profile picture in the top left corner to view someone’s status.

Find and view your contact’s WhatsApp status
Open WhatsApp on your phone, desktop app, or web browser. On the mobile app, tap status At the bottom.
For the desktop and web browser versions, click the broken circle icon in the upper left corner next to your user profile picture.
On the status page you can now see whether someone has left a status. This is shown under LATEST UPDATES. Just tap the circle to start the status.
While the status is playing, a progress bar at the top moves from left to right. When the end is reached, the status ends and you will be directed back to the WhatsApp status page. Also, keep in mind that if the status is a video, by default it will play with the sound muted. Tap the screen once to turn on the sound.
How to create a WhatsApp status
To create your own status, tap status at the bottom of the screen. You can now see your WhatsApp profile picture with the message above Add to my status. To start a status, tap the camera icon on the right to view an image or video-based status. Or the pencil symbol for a purely text-based status.
I went for an image-based status, and after tapping the camera icon, I pointed it at a photo on my office wall. If you want to use an image in your camera roll, it will also appear at the bottom of the screen. Just tap the one you want to use. A third option is to make a short video. At the bottom of the screen, under the round button, you can see Press and hold for video, tap for photo.
After the photo is taken, you will see options in the upper right corner to personalize the status. The first is to flip the picture.

The smiley face is used to insert stickers and emojis. Tap the one you want.
I selected a sticker and it appeared on the screen. You can drag it to where you want it with your finger. If you want to undo or remove the sticker at any time, just tap Cancel Arrow all the way to the left.
The last two options in the top right corner relate to what text you are adding (if any). Pick your color and start typing. Again, you can drag the text to any part of the screen.
When you’re done with the status, tap Status (contacts) below to place it.
Your WhatsApp profile picture has now been replaced with a circular thumbnail of the status you just created. Tap the thumbnail to view it. This circular thumbnail will also be shown on the status page of your WhatsApp contacts for them to view as well.
How to delete a WhatsApp status
To delete a WhatsApp status, tap your status on the status Page (but not the thumbnail). When you see the following page, tap the three horizontal dots on the right and select Extinguish from the drop down menu.
24 hours then it will go away (unless you remove it sooner).
Can you get an old, expired status update?
No, once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Can you download someone’s WhatsApp status?
There doesn’t seem to be an iPhone solution, but on Android:
- Download Google files.
- Tap the menu icon in the top left corner of the app.
- Tap on ideas and switch on Show hidden files.
- Go to your device’s file manager. Then navigate to Internal storage> WhatsApp> Media> States.
- All displayed statuses are shown in this folder. Tap the picture or video you want. Long press the selected item and save it to the desired location on the device.
You can also see if the contact has saved the status in their Facebook account. You may be able to download it there.
How can you see a WhatsApp status without being seen?
You should change your data protection settings beforehand so that your last seen status is not visible. You can also go offline and view them on the mobile app, but your contact will be notified when you come back online. A third option is to use WhatsApp Web and display the status update there offline in incognito mode. However, close the window before you reconnect to the Internet.
How long can a status video be?
WhatsApp says on its help pages that the maximum length of a status video is 30 seconds.
